Handling a new born might be difficult for the one who has not come across the new born before and their delicacy might be frightening to them but keeping in mind few basic reminders might be helpful for the newly parents in the upbringing of new angel.

Understanding Jaundice


  • Yellowish color appears in eyes and skin after 48 hours of life
  • Increases up to 4-5th day and starts to disappear around 7-10 days
  • In breast feed babies jaundice can last up to 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Adequate feed and proper monitoring is recommended for babies with jaundice.
  • Photo therapy is also recommended.

Reason of Vomiting In New Born


  • Usually overfeeding or improper feeding
  • Bottle fed babies do swallow air when vigorously feeds
  • Burp the baby during and after the feed ends.

Urine Output


  • Normally babies pass urine 6-12 times a day
  • Babies sometimes cry before passing urine due to discomfort of full bladder , become quite while passing and cry again due to wet napkins.

Understanding Stool In New Born


  • Initial stool id black in color with in 24 hours of birth
  • Black color stool is passed for 1 to 2 days
  • Transitional stools are greenish in color between 3 to 5 days followed by soft goldenish yellow stools in breast fed babies.
  • Babies can pass 6-10 stools/day
  • Some babies pass stool while feeding or immediately after feed.It is normal and lasts for 3 months.
  • Worry only if stools are watery with blood and mucous.
  • Lack of adequate weight gain.
  • Associated with fever, lethargy or persistent vomiting
  • Constipation needs to be evaluated by your pediatrician.

Infantile Colic


  • Babies who have colic cry a lot than other babies
  • Feed your baby in upright position
  • Burp your baby very often
  • If breast fed baby, mom can avoid spicy food, citrus foods and caffeine.
  • Put a baby on a stroller and go for a walk or drive
  • Seek medical advice if a colic baby has diarrhea,vomiting or abdominal distension

How to Protect Baby From Infection


  • Your baby's immune system is still quite immature, this makes him especially vulnerable to colds and other communicable diseases
  • Avoid taking babies to crowded indoor places
  • Avoid contact with anyone who has cold, flu or other active infection
  • Don't allow anyone smoke around your baby
  • Encourage anyone who comes in to close contact with your baby to wash their hands.
